	Havelli (the sequel to Shabanu) by Suzanne Fisher Staples Shabanu is wed to a man much older than she that has several other wives. They are mean to her like Cinderella's evil step-sisters. But Shabanu is quite crafty. She is determined to get an education for both herself and her young daughter.

	Night by Elie Wiesel A painless true story about the Jewish Holocaust, WWII. A young boy and father suffer years of incredible abuse. Yet the boy maintains his sense of humanity and comes away with a rich understanding of humankind. Highly Recommended for HS.

	Rice without rain by Minfong Ho Everything seems natural until some college students come to the village to convince the people that they are entitled to a better life. This causes tension and hardship but in the end the people will benefit. Monsoons Rice Growing Thailand.

	Shabanu : Daughter of the Wind by Suzanne Fisher Staples Her carefree world of fun and play suddenly changes as she matures. Shabanu will be required to do things she doesn't agree with. It is a matter of survival. In the end, Shabanu comes to a new understanding.

	Shiva's Fire by Suzanne Fisher Staples A young and talented dancer attends a special dance school (away from home). She is quite disciplined (she meditates regularly) and seems to have magical powers. She has a very strong mind. Many references to Hindu practices. India.

	Shizuko's Daughter by Kyoko Mori For Teenage Readers. Yuki finds her mother dead on the kitchen floor when she comes home from a piano lesson. Her father remarries and life becomes miserable. Yuki sustains herself with memories of her mom and visits to her grandparents. Buddhist rites

	The Clay Marble by Minfong Ho A Cambodian family is determined to stay together as they are forced to relocate to a refugee camp. Historical and cultural. Loaded with images of rice (gleaning and preparation) and sarongs that are constantly being washed and hung to dry.

	The Ghost and Mrs. Muir by R.A. Dick If you can get your hands on a copy of this book do so. This is a fun story. It will provide you with a view of the socialized roles of women. In college you will be required to read Ibsen's A Doll House.

	The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi A young girl sets sail across the Atlantic Ocean and has a life changing experience. Her parents cannot comprehend the drastic change. They can only assume that she's lost her mind. This book is on all the High School Reading Lists. Must Read !!!
